Parkes

Today Parkes is a thriving, pulsating community of 10,500 people, with a shire population of 15,300. Parkes is situated close to the geographical centre of New South Wales, along the Newell Highway. The Shire has something unique to offer the inquisitive traveller, providing friendly country-style hospitality, shire attractions and yearly events not to be missed.

The district boasts some of the richest and most productive agricultural and grazing land in the State and like many western communities, Parkes' history is intimately linked with the discovery of gold.

Boulder Park(Cnr Wentworth & Alexandra Sts)
This park was promised by the Housing Commission in the 1950's when they built the first homes in this area. It took forty years for them to give council the money to build it. Kids love this park.

Pioneer Oval and Spicer Park

This large area was the first recreation ground gazetted in Parkes, and used to include forty more acres to the north as part of the ground. The additional properties were sold off to pay for other facilities in the town. This area was the peoples park, the common and also was once a golf course. It now houses rugby union, rugby league, AFL, soccer, cricket, little athletics and many school athletics carnivals. Spicer Park is also the shire council’s well-equipped caravan park.

Memorial Hill Reserve

The reserve is home to our 'lighthouse' war memorial built to honour all the dead from all the wars. It is hoped that plants and flowers will be planted from many of the countries that our servicemen fought in during those wars. This Reserve is also home to the Rotary Arboretum.
